Tom Latham’s counterattacking hundred caused Indian bowlers to falter, as New Zealand rallied to defeat India by seven wickets in the opening ODI on Friday.

India had high hopes after scoring 306 for 7 on a pitch where a 300+ total had been chased once. They then left the New Zealanders at 88 for 3 in the 20th over.

Latham’s unbeaten 104-ball 145 and skipper Kane Williamson’s 94 not out off 98 deliveries helped the hosts eventually reach the mark with 17 balls to spare as they scored 221 runs for an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership.

New Zealand needed 91 runs in 66 balls at around 8.30 runs per over at the end of the 39th over.

The hosts were in complete control of the game by the time Shardul Thakur (1/63) had finished a forgettable 40th over, with Latham scoring 25 runs with the help of four fours and a six.

That turn of events decisively favored New Zealand as the visitors battled to contain Latham as he surged to victory.

Williamson smashed seven fours and one maximum, while Latham’s aggressive innings included up to 19 boundaries and five sixes.

In his debut, tearaway pacer Umran Malik (2/66) made a strong impression with his thunderbolts following a strong performance even if the teenager from Jammu turned out to be pricey, the Indian batters.
